Albert W. Gilchrist was born in Greenwood, South Carolina on January 15, 1858, the son of General William E. and Rhoda Elizabeth (Waller) Gilchrist. After attending Carolina Military Institute and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, he became a Brigadier General in the Florida militia. Park Trammell was born in Macon County, Alabama, on April 9, 1876. His family moved to Florida when he was an infant, and he was raised in Polk County near Lakeland. He studied law at Vanderbilt University and received his LL.B. degree from Cumberland University in 1899. He practiced law in Lakeland, and served for terms as mayor of that city (1899-1903).
